Many people tend to have the wrong idea about stories for children and children’s books, which have been around for much longer than you think. For example – when do you think that the story about Robin Hood was written? Would it surprise you to learn that the original story was written by Thomas Malory some 560 years ago? Well, it was, and many stories such as this one have been around for far longer than we imagine.

Another good example is Charles Perrault, a French writer who lived from 1628 to 1703. Perrault “invented” the fairy tale in the middle years of the 17th Century, and some of his more famous stories include the Sleeping Beauty, Cinderella, Puss in Boots, and Little Red Riding Hood. Three other famous authors who wrote children’s books in the past were Wilhelm and Jakob Grimm – affectionately known as the Brothers Grimm, never as the Grimm brothers – and Hans Christian Andersen. All three were writers from the early part of the 19th Century, and were responsible for such titles as Snow White and Hansel and Gretel by the former, and The Ugly Duckling, The Emperor’s New Clothes and The Little Mermaid by the latter.

Children’s books have always been extremely important, and we parents will always remember the times we read bedtime stories to our toddlers as we tucked them into bed. Every so often a writer comes along who outshines all the others.

Sixty or seventy years ago it was Enid Blyton and her Famous Five, and Beatrix Potter and her Peter Rabbit. Today the favourite author of many children (and some adults) has to be J. K. Rowling with her series of books about Harry Potter. Yes, this type of literature has been around for a long time, but it is much of the earlier literature that is set to be with us for many years to come.

For some cultures, reading for pleasure is a relatively new phenomenon. and was enjoying the process of creating a “love of reading” culture at home. It is certain that great parent-child discussions are happening in the home because of this reading culture. Developing your child’s habit of reading for pleasure can be quite tricky, especially if they think reading is not fun! Most likely you already know whether your child enjoys being read to or reads silently. So what to do if they don’t? Here are a few ideas that might help your family become a reading family. Caution: All ideas come with a dose of patience, persistence, and consistency.

Read poetry, sing songs, or read the same book over and over. They will be able to recite that book before you can. You are building language skills, patterns, rhythm, and wonderful brain stimulation. We also practice letters, numbers, and spelling with shaving cream on the walls in the tub. Bathrooms are wonderful teaching environments. Create special reading places in your home where only reading can happen. We had a wonderful pre-k teacher who brought in a plastic swimming pool to classroom and filled it with books.

They will begin telling stories about you from their memories. At least you can correct their erroneous recounts! Becoming a reading family may take some persistence, but the rewards are “priceless”!

The Readers Club, Pakistan’s first and only online book rental service, was launched in June 2009 by two friends, Jawad Yousuf and Usman Siddiqui. On their return from the US after completing their education eight years ago, they realised that the reading culture that once thrived in the country was no more.

They spent their time brainstorming how one could revive it, but their own businesses demanded a lot of their time and it was not until much later that they were able to come up with a plan of action and implement it. Initially they had thought of establishing a book-sharing platform but since that wasn’t logistically possible, they decided to create a book rental service. They realised people were not reluctant to read, but access to books was a problem. The most common complaint was that books were too expensive to purchase, especially the newest ones. So they decided to structure their product in a way that would address both the issues of affordability and interest.

The importance of education cannot be overstated. Educational books play a vital role in primary and elementary children’s education. We recommend the following to be the very best of such educational books.

Some of the best books for kids today are children’s educational books. That’s because kids learn concepts faster when they see them illustrated and explained in fun, interactive books. And parents like that!

Look in the children’s section of any major book store or library, and you’ll see two types of concept books dominating the shelves: ABC books and counting books. ABC books for kids have been around for years. Counting (or 1-2-3) books for kids have probably been around just as long, although books that feature the alphabet can be a lot more elaborate. Plus the number of letters in the alphabet are perfect for filling up a typical picture book (usually 32 pages long).

It’s that time of year!

Since 2007, each year we receive hundreds of submissions for the year’s best business books in various categories. Throughout fall, we spend a lot of time reading, talking, and thinking about what makes a book “best.” The books we select might not always be what’s expected, and we think that’s ok.

All year long, we feature our Bestseller list along with Inc.com, which identifies the top-selling books we handle. The Book Awards are our chance to pick big-sellers, non-sellers, quirky titles, obvious titles, or any combination thereof. These are the books that struck us as readers this year. We hope you enjoyed them, too. And if not yet, will soon.

As our multi-year lists are growing beyond simple blog posts, we’ve now created a page on our site to archive the lists from year to year.

For 2010, you’ll see all the category shortlist and overall winners, but to find out what the Overall Best Business Book was that we selected this year, you’ll have to wait until we announce it at our Business Book Awards event held in NYC on January 19, 2011.

The Amazon editorial review says; “Think and Grow Rich has been called the “Granddaddy of All Motivational Literature.” It was the first book to boldly ask, “What makes a winner?” The man who asked and listened for the answer, Napoleon Hill, is now counted in the top ranks of the world’s winners himself.

The most famous of all teachers of success spent “a fortune and the better part of a lifetime of effort” to produce the “Law of Success” philosophy that forms the basis of books and that is so powerfully summarized in this one.

In the original Think and Grow Rich, published in 1937, Hill draws on stories of Andrew Carnegie, Thomas Edison, Henry Ford, and other millionaires of his generation to illustrate his principles. In the updated version, Arthur R. Pell, Ph.D., a nationally known author, lecturer, and consultant in human resources management and an expert in applying Hill’s thought, deftly interweaves anecdotes of how contemporary millionaires and billionaires, such as Bill Gates, Mary Kay Ash, Dave Thomas, and Sir John Templeton, achieved their wealth. Outmoded or arcane terminology and examples are faithfully refreshed to preclude any stumbling blocks to a new generation of readers.”
